Issue 10 – Lead up to the 2007 Edinburgh Marathon

It only seems like yesterday that JJ and Guest 5 were gallantly running the scorching London marathon and here we are just a few days before the Edinburgh marathon!  We are hoping for cold, wet weather and that the race is as flat and quick as the organisers promise.

We’ve been looking into the latest in medical research on the effects of marathon running.  It seems most competitors lose 3,000 to 4,000 calories during the course of the race (equal to 6 - 8 eggnog lattes or 10 lamb chops!), which is not surprising given each foot hits the road 20,000 times!  More worryingly, the race takes away about 2cm in height due to the compression of the spinal vertebrate which means if JJ runs anymore this year he’ll become pocket-size!

On the subject of weight I’ll be running the course almost two stones lighter than my last marathon which will hopefully pay dividends.  This year I’ve made up my own training schedule which has been very much freestyle… speed work, weights and long weekend runs… not to mention a smattering of marathon drinking!

Once we’ve put this run behind us the drinking will start in earnest both along the Golden Mile in Edinburgh and at all our unvisited tube locals.  Keep an eye out for further column updates soon which will focus on our website re-launch and the creation of a genuine Marathon Drinker’s Athletics club!

Issue 9 – Lead up to the 2007 London Marathon

As Marathon Drinkers approaches our 2nd birthday it seems the right time for another column entry!  It's been a hectic year of running and drinking and we are now about two thirds through the drinking challenge and have also participated in a large number of running events this year.

MD legend JJ and Guest 5 are both shaping up for the 2007 Flora London Marathon in just a few days time.  Yes in true 'Rocky-Balboa-style', JJ is hauling his creaking frame back on to the streets of London for another crack at the greatest marathon in the world.  He'll be joined by the youthful Guest 5 who is running for a very worthy cause as she targets the achievement of becoming the second ever MD guest to run a full marathon.  Good luck to the both of you!

Then just one month later, JJ and I will be back on the circuit running our first Edinburgh marathon over the second May bank holiday.... surely to be followed by a pub crawl along the golden mile complete with medals.  And on the subject of medals, as any runner will tell you it's all about the gong!  For those events which do not give out medals (e.g. the Kingston Breakfast run mug!) take note; we have taken a comprehensive poll of marathon runners worldwide and are pleased to publish the official chart of what runners expect from a race:

1. Medal (a.k.a "The Gong")

2. T-shirt

3. A steaming turd

4. Two steaming turds

5. A mug

So get your act together race organisers and we'll see you all soon at a pub or race near you!!
