The Pingles Leisure Centre or ‘The Dream Factory’ as I prefer to call it was the scene for a PB shattering 10k. I arrived early and registered at the desk which was manned by a group of octogenarians. I surveyed the competition which was now in double figures and by the time the starter gun went off (yes, a very old guy was trusted with a real pistol!) there was a small but hopeful field of 70 runners.
The three lap course round Nuneaton was fast if uneventful save the Saturday night binge-drinking pool of sick which made me heave as I ran past it on each occasion! I knew I was on form prior to the race and had taken the unprecedented step of advertising to colleagues and friends that I was attempting a PB.
Thankfully I ran like the wind and even lapped some runners but I was still surprised to see I was heading for the finish line four and a half minutes faster than the Personal Best I had set earlier in the year! This represented a top 15 finish in what was admittedly the smallest race I had run in but I knew the gong was mine and an even faster 10k might one day follow!
