The Hastings Half Marathon (11-Mar-07)

Tim - 1 hour 56 min 23 sec
JJ - 1 hour 55 min 50 sec

I was back for another horse brass medal and this time with my MD partner in crime.  We were on the early special train from London (for special people) and arrived with just enough time to complete our pre-run activities.  These did not go well for JJ given his GPS stopwatch broke, he had to grease ‘n strap up his damaged feet and the weather was becoming increasingly hotter.  Seeing he was now wearing his grumpy shorts I wished him good luck and sped off at my own pace ready to attack the hills.

At around the 6 mile mark I overtook an older guy with ‘100 marathons’ on his shirt.  I enquired if this was the case and he said “no, I’m up to 255 now”…. so while I had left him for dust he’d proven the old adage that form is temporary and class is permanent.  I got faster and faster as the race went on and knew I was close to PB but sadly missed out by 24 seconds as my legs deserted me on the run in.

JJ himself had a far better race which is no surprise given the great atmosphere and sheer number of spectators that this run generates.  He eased his way around the first half and upped the pace to come in with a fine PB… and more in the locker if you listen to him!

We proudly collected our medals (made by the Jumbo Medal Company!) and made the decision on what leather belt we would purchase to display them in.  JJ opted for a conservative 4-holer while I went straight in for an 8-holer which I just knew I was close to filling… much to the delight of the old ladies selling them who nearly fainted with delight!  We then had a well earned fish and chips on the seafront before indulging in two FA cup matches, a stirring 6 Nations victory for England against France and a late train journey back to the big smoke.  What a day!
