Magic darts! |
A nice easy lunchtime outing, this pub is almost immediately above the Devons Road DLR station (turn left at top of the stairs from the platform). The decor is decidedly nautical with rubber rings, model boats and a nice collection of authentic Royal Navy hats behind the bar! Another nice feature was the old style painted mirrors and glass which added a nostalgic feel. However, the place is let down by its general shabbiness, which is a shame. Although there were plenty of workmen around, so you never know, it might be getting a face-lift soon (or at least the drains fixing).
The very friendly barmaid served us our beers with a smile and plenty of banter. The BDO darts was on the TV and the local punters were hooked. Ever men of the people, within thirty seconds of entering we were bantering with a geezer about the Taylor-Barneveld match and we were established as honorary "faces". We sat near the TV and away from the smoky bar and observed the scene. It became obvious why our friendly barmaid (sweetie, love, darling, sugar) was so friendly as we noticed that she was swigging away at a Tennants Super all the time we were there. An honest girl, not wanting to eat into the Landlords profits no doubt!
We enjoyed our stay, and work wasn't a great incentive to leave, so we had a second pint and watched the end of the darts match before heading back with a seed of an idea for an after work MD drink at Brixton well and truly planted...
