Known for being the oldest pub on the Isle of Dogs |
This was second time lucky for us following an aborted visit a previous lunchtime (they don’t open until 3pm!). It also heralded the long awaited return of Guest 1 who had found himself “too busy of late” to have made the effort to join us. Inside the pub was smoky but homely, with dark red wallpaper and a thick, sticky carpet (Ok, so my home doesn’t quite look like this but you get the picture).
There was a flight of stairs seemingly to nowhere and the tables all had local history tit-bits and newspaper cuttings under glass covers which emphasized just how old this pub was and the place it holds in the local community. You’re unlikely to get many of the new breed of Wharfers in this pub but it’s OK for a pint if you’re passing. My wingmen and I supped up and headed off for another at Bermondsey...
