On leaving the station we had the sinking feeling we might encounter the kind of pub in which we would have to down our beers and make a hasty retreat. We walked past numerous ‘Desmond’s’ style hairdressers and then reached a pub which looked old and local from the façade. Inside it was a well kept, lively pub, brimful of local black men. We stood out like a sore thumb but were well received… almost as much as the three older honky women who were quite popular with the locals. We were intrigued by the specials board which featured “roasted goat” and by the signs behind the bar which included “if you can’t afford your own drinks please don’t bother other customers”. The other sign which caught our eye stated “we treat ladies to a free glass of wine anytime”. Indignant that we did not qualify we headed home, hoping for free alcohol at Finchley Central....
