Armed with a story of a friend being subjected to an unprovoked attack from a weirdo in a wheelchair, our hopes weren't too high for this station. From the main exit, with the road to Highbury on your right, straight across the road was the Gas Light which didn't look too bad, little did we know the pleasures that lay within... We liked the wooden seating that ran the whole way around the walls of the bar and we were amazed to find a number of books above the fireplace and on some shelves, maybe the North bank faithful were a literate lot after all? But the jackpot was well and truely hit when Tim noticed the advertised deal of a Toastie with a pint for £3. The (possibly) a-sexual barmaid, flicked back his pony tail and offered a cheese and bacon variety, thankfully accepted by Tim. But this studenty chap didn't call through to the kitchen, oh no. This man's a genius and a perfectionist. He made his way to the end of the bar, whipped out a toastie making machine and made it himself. Photographic evidence had to be got of this pinnacle of the publicans trade. We were interested to find that he had been reading Before European Hegemony: The World System A.D.1250-1350 by J.L.Abu Lughod. This chap was obviously an intellectual. We briefed him on Marathon Drinking, posted a business card on his pin board and left him in awe. Will we see a large number of hits from the LSE now as word spreads? Only time will tell.... A most rewarding end to the evening, but would we find such delights on our next outing at Canary Wharf...?

Tim's messiah at work, the man's a genius!

I think he liked it
