With just a couple of pubs left, Zone 1 was suddenly beginning to feel like an old friend we had outgrown long ago. This malaise was almost lifted when we thought we were entering JJ's namesake but the sloppy hieroglyphics actually spelt out F.Ts... oh well. With over 240 pubs left to visit we are bound to find a Pub JJ or Tim Tavern somewhere. On route we had tried to tempt a charity collector to join us as Guest 10. The young Kiwi was sorely tempted but finally spurned us for fear of losing his job (but still... it had made him forget he was begging us for money!). Inside the pub, smug Brits were watching the English obliterate the Ozzies in the first Ashes test... little did they know what a collapse would follow! Intrigued by the promise of a "members only" bar upstairs, we followed the signs to the E.C Bar (English Club Bar). It was the same collection of suits upstairs but somehow we felt like outsiders! It was very enjoyable though. The pub was adorned with tempting drink offers, which a couple of young ladies were clearly working their way through (funded by city slickers old enough to be their fathers). We signed the Visitors book which was mandatory for non-members (when I say signed I mean we scribed our MD web site address and an invite to check out this review!) and headed back to work. Our 60th pub has been a diamond event, and with Aldgate reopening the following Monday, we would soon put zone 1 to bed.
