Not too train-spotty. A proper mans pub with real ales and a good atmosphere.
Facilities  2  TVs, 1 fruit, old style ItBox quizzer
Ladies  Not too bad. There were quite a few women in this busy pub, the two hefty and grumpy barmaids really brought the score down. though.

OVERALL  A really good find, we'll certainly be coming back here!

Euston was approached with some trepidation. This is not an area known for it's decent pubs and both of us had "previous" in this area with no decent results. We were meeting GUEST3, who would be joining Tim for the rest of the evening and we were hoping we could find somewhere decent. We were bemused to find the Head Of Steam just outside the station. It's seventies style curtains were filthy and had a horrendous pattern. The pub sign was cheap as cheap can be. Things weren't looking good.....

As we waiting for GUEST3, we looked in the window of the pub and made some interesting discoveries. Copies of the Evening Standard London Marathon supplement filled the window shelf - surely a good omen? The pub was in the "Good bar guide" from 2001-2005 and surely a place awarded "North London CAMRA pub of the Year 1999" couldn't be all that bad??? We hoped........

Wow! were we surprised!? This pub is all upstairs and filled with railway memorabilia. There are old station signs(!), model trains and pictures all over the walls. Things were looking up! The choice of beers was impressive, JJ opting for a real ale which turned out to be a great choice. GUEST3 also went for a real ale, which seemed to go down well. A couple of attractive ladies were at the bar, Tim tried not to look at them too obviously and unfortunately they left shortly afterwards, leaving JJ unawares of the missed opportunity for eye candy.

Already buoyed up, Tim's excitement was just about to go into overdrive as sitting at one end of the bar, scowling into a pint, wearing a god-awful grey 80's style suit and watching the Aussie rules on the TV was none other than the Republic of Ireland's most capped player and sometime Villa legend, Steve 'Stan' Staunton! Tim couldn't build up the courage to approach the man, but tried to get a photo for the records, the result of which can be viewed below. David Bailey he ain't!

This pub was fast turning into our favorite so far. The atmosphere was good and it was convenient for the station, a real unexpected gem of a find. It's 'MD Stamp of Approval' status was confirmed with the discovery of the "Take-Away Menu". 33% discount for takeaways of 36,72 or 144 pints of real ale. Genius!

We'll be back!

After that excitement, a cheeky single at lunchtime on Monday would surely be a letdown. We would see, as we next visited Southwark.
