We got to Bank after coming from Waterloo to face our first big dilemma of the drinking challenge - Bank has something like half a dozen exits. We chose one but with no pub in sight, we then went around the whole area desperately trying to find a qualifier. There were a few bars but things were looking bleak. Eventually we stumbled across a little snicket that had a great looking pub half way down it. Horror of horrors, it was closed. Just our luck! We kept spotting swinging signs, but all of them were Guild signs, not pubs. Just as we were thinking we might have to devise some new rulings to cover this type of situation, Tim was bumped into by some blue-rinse old women coming out of a building. The man's power of attraction of the opposite sex knows no boundaries! Actually the pensioners were piling out of a pub which they had obviously wandered into by mistake on their day trip to London. We waited for the line to die down and entered the Counting House. The mock-baroque feel and a lovely tiled floor and a balcony with a central oval bar earned this pub a star and a half, helped by the impressive variety of real ales and wines. Unfortunately it all went downhill from there. Poncy barmen, only one barmaid and basically no women in the pub were bad enough, but the clientele were the worst kind of city suit, boring everyone to death with their tales of millions made and bonuses to be spent. We cursed all of them and their families, quickly downed our (expensive) pints and left heading for Liverpool Street.
